Air Conditioner Articles: Electrostatic Filters
Most window, portable, and built-in AC air conditioning units come equipped with a filter. The filter works to capture all of the dirt and dust particles in the air to ensure that the air conditioner is not recirculating them. However, some filters are better equipped to do this than others. For those who wish to make certain that their air is as clean as possible, an electrostatic filter might be the best choice.
Electrostatic filters are made of synthetic materials which are constantly developing electrostatic charges as friction is applied to their plastic fibers. This friction is provided by the constant air flowing through the filter and results in an increased "attraction" to particles such as dust, pollen, animal dander, and molds.
If you wish to replace your current "throwaway" filter on your air conditioning unit, simply purchase a corresponding size of an electrostatic version. As these filters have a low resistence to airflow, they are compatible with all air handling systems. You may only use one electrostatic air filter per air conditioning unit. Make sure that the air is flowing in the direction indicated on the filter's label.
To clean your air conditioner's electrostatic filter, follow these steps:
- Remove the filter from your air conditioning unit.
- Use your vacuum's crevice attachment to remove any heavy buildup.
- Lay the filter on a flat surface and spray it on both sides with a cleaning agent such as 409 or Fantastic.
- Prop the filter with either the "wash arrow" or the dirtiest side down against a fence or outside wall and flush out the detergent with a garden hose. Once the first side is clean, flip the filter over and repeat on the second side.
- Shake excess water out of the filter and allow to dry in a dish drain.
- Make sure to repeat this process regularly to ensure your unit and filter are working as efficiently as possible.
Electrostatic filters are a great choice for those with allergies or asthma or for people with pets or small children in their homes.
